Who we are
The vision of SL-JCP is to serve as a collaborative bridge between Japan and Sri Lanka, providing inspiring and lasting solutions to grand challenges facing humanity and the earth. Our core values are inclusion and sustainability, aiming to bring peace and prosperity to all peoples we engage with.
Our Mission
-
Project Portfolio Development:
We create a portfolio of projects that are implementable, scalable, and replicable. Our Project Incubator transforms ideas into working project documents with well-defined stakeholders. As projects mature, some integrate into thematic clusters called propulsive projects.
-
Performance Monitoring:
Every three years, we review projects for implementation status and performance, focusing on:
- Contributing to the real economy in either or both countries
- Addressing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (UNDSD)
- Strengthening the Japan-Sri Lanka partnership in the Indo-Pacific region
The first evaluation is scheduled for 2023. Details on monitoring and evaluation will be shared as they are decided.
-
Public Engagement:
We organize seminars, conferences, and publications to share project outcomes and engage the public.
Our History
SL-JCP traces its roots to two initiatives:
-
Japan-Sri Lanka Innovation Platform (J-SLIP):
Started in December 2015 by expatriate Sri Lankans and Japanese colleagues, contributing to the Science and Technology for Society in Sri Lanka (STS-SL) Conference in 2016.
-
Joint Comprehensive Partnership (JCP) Secretariat:
Established in December 2016 by the governments of Japan and Sri Lanka to fast-track development initiatives, with offices in Tokyo and Colombo.
The JCP Secretariat organized activities around five Working Groups: Infrastructure and power development, Foreign investment and technology, Urban and regional development, STI-led human development, and Safety and security. J-SLIP was absorbed into the Foreign investment and technology group, incubating over 20 projects, many of which are now part of SL-JCP's portfolio.
After the closure of the JCP Secretariats in November 2018, SL-JCP was established in June 2019 as a General Purpose Association in Japan to sustain and develop new initiatives. Our founding Board of Directors includes members from J-SLIP and new leaders for the future.
